Green for a Change, a South Berkshire-based affiliate of the Massachusetts Climate Action Network, has received a grant to provide a limited number of compact fluorescent light bulbs to seniors in subsidized housing throughout the county.

With the distribution, there will be educational materials and safe handling and disposal information given to the residents and complex staffs.

With the enthusiastic cooperation of Berkshire Housing, approximately 100 light bulbs have been installed in the apartments of seniors in Pittsfield and Lee.

Sign-ups for the free light bulbs are currently under way at housing complexes in Great Barrington and North Adams.

The compact fluorescent light bulbs typically last for five years and use a fraction of the energy used by conventional incandescent bulbs. Seniors will save money on their electric bill and avoid the danger inherent in changing overhead light bulbs.
